It’s officially fall and I’m facing the fact that my garden is on its way out. I’ve maintained my garden through a busy year and it gave me a daily task to do that I really enjoyed. Since we’re ushering in soup and Pumpkin Spice Season, I thought I’d take some time to reflect on how this little garden saved us a little change this year.
How it Started
I bought starter plants from Lowes this year. They had a sale going where you could get 3 starters for $12. I felt like it was a pretty good deal. I prefer starter plants over seeds because I love instant gratification! In the past, I’ve grown a few veggies from seeds like Arugula, but I honestly don’t have the patience.
Starter Plants We Purchased
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Jalapeños
- Mint
- Rosemary
- Kale
- Basil
Total cost: $22
** I grew the green onion from the cuttings of grocery store ones. By putting the roots in water, they began to grow and I potted them. I bought them for $0.69 at Aldi.
Meals We Cooked
We got a lot of great meals out of the things we grew.
Basil – Pesto, Pasta and pizza Garnish
Tomatoes – Pastas, Salads, Salsas
Kale – Salad
Rosemary – Rack of lamb, Chicken, Mashed Potatoes
Jalapeños – Salsa, Chicken Tortilla Soup
Mint – Mojitos, Lemonade, Detox Water
Green Onion – Garnish for a bunch of yummy dishes!
How Much it Saved Us
These are obviously rough estimates of how much our garden saved us, but I’m basing these numbers on how often we’d buy the item and how much they typically cost me at my local grocery.
Tomatoes – $20 (Typically purchased weekly)
Kale – $15 (Typically purchased every other week)
Jalapeños – $5 (Typically purchased once a month)
Basil – $20 (Typically purchased twice a month)
Rosemary – $5 ( Only purchased occasionally)
Mint – $5 ( Only purchased occasionally)
Green Onion -$8
Total: $78
Total Savings: $56
I know $50 doesn’t sound like much, but hear me out! Saving $50 during a time when groceries are astronomical makes a difference. In addition, it’s convenient and a relaxing hobby for yourself or a fun activity to do with your kiddos!
