Our bedroom was pretty plain and standard before we embarked on this particular DIY adventure. We purchased our house in 2020 and knew we wanted to turn it into a series of cozy spaces that make us feel good. I’ve always wanted a grown-up look for the bedroom, and as newlyweds, it felt like the right time to add more mature décor.

Determine the scope of your project
We knew we wanted to create an abstract design on the wall, which was helpful, because knowing what you want is half the battle! I began by saving ideas I liked to a Pinterest board and on my Instagram. Then, I began researching DIY processes that were within our budget, skill level, and the time frame we were willing to allocate for such a project. The most helpful tutorial I found was by BYOT on Youtube!
Note that this project could have been completed over a long weekend, but we had to stretch it out over weeks due to our wedding and honeymoon.
Total cost: $350
Level of difficulty: 6/10
Total time spent: 4 Days
Materials
- 10 1×2 in. primed MDF boards (8 ft. long) – $8/piece | Lowes
- Brad nailer – Home Depot
- Painter’s tape – Lowes
- Caulk – Lowes
- Sandpaper – Lowes
- Matte black paint – Lowes
- Stud finder (optional) – Home Depot
Step-by-step guide
1. Make a rough sketch of your design on paper.
2. After you measure, use a saw (Table/mitre/circular or whatever you have on hand), to cut the pieces you need for the design. If you’re not using a table saw that cuts in angles, make sure you’re being precise with the angles needed for seamless attachment.
3. Line the sides, top, and bottom of the wall with your 1 in. × 2 in. MDF trim using a brad nailer.
4. If using, take the stud finder to locate the studs in your wall. Create a line on the wall with painter’s tape so you’ll be able to keep track of where the studs are throughout the process.
5. Install the MDF boards with the brad nailer. Making sure to sink nails into studs along the trim.
6. Fill in the nail holes with spackling and seams with caulk, and sand down the everything until they’re smooth.
7. Paint the boards, walls, and corners with even brush strokes until the color covers the entire surface area.
8. High five your partner for the teamwork and pose for a pic in front of your new DIY accent wall!

I love how matte this black is! Not only did we give our bedroom a custom, cost-conscious design, Bruce and I got the bonus benefits of doing it together. We love a couple’s bonding time that’s also productive! He ended up handling most of the large areas, and I went in and focused on the corners and trim.
