Hey friends! My son is two weeks into solids and I’ve really found the right rhythm with his food prep. We’ve decided to introduce solids pretty slowly in a way that feels comfortable to us. That means he’s primarily on purees. On the weekends, we try a little more BLW-friendly eating with things like eggs, avocados, and bananas.
The key to baby food prep is a solid freezer stash. Most purees can do a solid 2-3 days in the fridge, but then you end up having to make more baby food every couple of days. My preferred method is choosing two Saturdays a month and batching baby food to fill my freezer.
Making Baby Food
The baby food maker I use is from Amazon. It’s not an all-in-one maker, however. I steam or boil my veggies separately then blend down to a puree. My double boiler pot works perfectly for steaming. If you don’t want to buy a separate baby food maker, you can always use a high-powered blender like a Vitamix.

Baby Food Freezer Storage
My baby food maker comes with a few freezer storage trays that work really well. They freeze into nice-sized portions. I also love freezing with my Souper Cube tray. The Souper Cube tray has a really tight seal and is great for runnier purees. After the purees freeze, I like to remove them from the trays and place them in reusable bags. I also like to add a label of the purees in the bag and the date it was made. I usually use a piece of blue painter’s tape and a sharpie to keep them organized!
Thawing Baby Food
I have a few high-quality glass baby food containers from Amazon that are perfect for thawing out baby food. Just pop some frozen puree in a glass jar the night before. By the next morning, the food is thawed and the consistency is still great!
Benefits Baby Food Prep
Baby food prep saves me loads of money. I buy fruits and veggies in bulk from places like Aldi or Costco. I grab the bags of pears or apples because the cost er item ends up being really affordable. In addition to the cost saving, you get the benefit of knowing exactly what’s in your baby’s food. It’s a huge benefit when you see recalls and dangers of packaged baby food everywhere. These are the biggest reason for baby food prepping.
