We’ve put off the window situation in our new home for an embarrassingly long time. But it makes sense when you hear why.
I got a quote from a local blinds company shortly after moving in and was shocked by the $3,000 price tag! I think that once I started hearing astronomical numbers like that, I put the task down and didn’t come back to it.
We just aren’t looking to invest that much on window treatments when we know this isn’t our forever home. Plus, the paper blinds were a cheap, easy, and effective solution that we could live with in the meantime.
But the day finally came for us to upgrade.
After researching affordable options, I decided on Levolor blinds. They are the highest recommended options from the hardware store and the experts on Reddit(lol)! The reviews were fairly positive and there were a ton of options to choose from.
We measured our windows and placed a pickup order at the hardware store. Use this review and DIY installation guide to help you decide if Levolor blinds are the best option for you!
DIY: How to install Levolor blinds
Once we opened the box, the directions were pretty straightforward, but here’s a step-by-step guide on how we did it.
Materials
Directions
1. Measure and mark holes with a pencil on the inside of the window.
2. Using your drill, drill holes to attach the top brackets.
3. Insert the blinds.
4. Add the top trim using the included clips for the long middle piece. The two end pieces snap on.
Pros of Levolor blinds
Cordless – While you might be used to yanking a set of strings to open and close your blinds, these offer a more seamless process. You manually lift them up to open and pull them down to close.
Light Blocking – They control the amount of light that gets into a space really well. This is an especially great option if you’re looking to block out the sun during a midday nap or you’re on an inverted sleep schedule. When they’re closed, only a little light gets through.
Affordable – It would cost around $700 to add these blinds to all (7?) of the windows in our house. That’s more than $2k less than what were quoted!
Cons of Levolor blinds
Detail – Although they look pretty good, when standing close to them, you can notice that all the blades aren’t completely straight and that there are breaks in the trim. The trim clips on, leaving a gap. I guess this could be avoided by purchasing the blades with a smaller width, but I wanted the larger ones because I thought they’d look a little better. I still agree.
Inconsistent – The colors don’t match perfectly with all the pieces. They are varying shades of white.
The bottom line on Levolor blinds
I think it all comes down to your home. If you’re in your forever home, it may be worth investing in custom blind treatments. In our case, the blinds are also going to be accompanied by curtains, and the custom route was way too pricey. They’re a great solution for those who want a midway option between paper and custom blinds.
