From scratch? I know. I know. Who has the time? Trust me, I get it. I’m a busy working mom and making things from scratch often requires time that most of us don’t have.
But making things from scratch has a few benefits. It’s usually cheaper, but also, it also often tastes substantially better than the store-bought version. Luckily, you can make big batches of things you make from scratch and freeze them to eat later!
Even though it takes a little more planning and execution, I’ve realized there are a few things you should definitely try to make from scratch (and I’ve linked all my favorite recipes).
- Biscuits – The ingredients are so affordable and you can easily make two or three batches at a time. Instead of needing to eat them right then and there, you can free the dough or freeze already-baked biscuits in a Ziploc bag.
- Sandwich Bread – also super affordable and easy to freeze. In theory, you can bake a couple of loaves once a month and freeze the ones you won’t get to in time,
- Cookies – Nothing is better than homemade cookies. Seriously. The mix or pre-made dough from most stores does not compare.
- Granola – Super quick and easy to make. Measure, mix, and bake. This is way overpriced at the grocery store and significantly cheaper to buy the ingredients and make it at home over and over again.
- Salsa – Store-bought salsa just doesn’t do it for me anymore. Now, I use fresh jalapeƱos, cilantro, and onion to make a really fresh-tasting snack. I make a batch 2 or 3 times a month.
- Simple Syrups (for Coffee and Drinks) – This is something you should NEVER buy from the store unless you’re looking for specialized flavored ones. But regular simple and brown sugar syrup can be made with as little as $0.10 worth of sugar.
